Audi A5 Cabrio and S5 Cabrio 2017
It is the third body of the Audi A5. Currently, the A5 is sold with a coupe (Audi A5 and S5 copy) and a five-door (Audi A5 and S5 Sportback). It is on sale from the end of February 2017 with diesel and petrol engines of 190 and 354 hp (the latter corresponds to the S5 sports version). It is a well-built car, which conveys a sense of quality and care for details.
It can be an excellent alternative for those looking for a convertible to share with the family and to make long trips. In its driving, even in the S5 version, the comfort of driving on sportsmanship, both by the touch transmitted by its controls and by the adjustment of the suspension, which is rather smooth.
This A5 Cabrio is 4.67 meters in length, which is 5 centimeters more than the previous model (A5 Cabrio 2012) and the same as the A5 Coupé currently sold. There is more space at the shoulders and legs of the occupants of the rear seats, although they may still be used by adults or, in any case, by children who no longer require a child seat. This increase in longitudinal space is due to the fact that the wheelbase of the A5 Cabrio 2017 grows with respect to the model it replaces and that the seats are “more compact”. Although larger, the new A5 Cabrio is up to 40 kg lighter than the previous one.
At the beginning of its commercialization only three versions are available, with a starting price of 54 500 euros for the 2.0 TDI of 190 horses, 58 750 € for the 2.0 TFSI of 252 hp and 86 900 € for the S5 (price list) . With the Diesel engine, both the BMW 4 Series Convertible and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible are cheaper (comparative equipment fact sheet). When all other versions are put up for sale, the range will consist of the following combination of engines and gearboxes. In mid-2017, Audi will upgrade the range with a new diesel engine of 286 hp (3.0 TDI) replacing that of 272 horses, which will be available only during the start of commercialization (this engine will also reach the A5 Coupé and others Models.
Depending on the chosen engine, the gearshift can be manual or automatic (which in turn can be seven gears in versions with four-cylinder engine or eight in which have six-cylinder engine). The traction can be front or full. The total traction, in turn, can be permanent (quattro) or connectable (quattro-ultra). For the more powerful versions, which have a six-cylinder engine, a sporty rear differential is available.
It has a canvas roof whose drive is automatic (if it is running, only requires a touch on the corresponding control), and it takes 15 seconds to unclog the body and 18 to cover it. These actions can be performed at speeds up to 50 kilometers per hour. The hood of the Mercedes-Benz E Class Convertible needs 20 seconds to complete the operation and can be performed up to 40 km / h. The canvas roof of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabrio needs the same time, but the operation can be performed up to 50 kilometers per hour. The BMW 4 Series Convertible, which has a folding metal roof, takes 32 seconds to power the hood and this operation can only start at less than 15 kilometers per hour.
The trunk has 380 liters of capacity if the roof is placed on the body. When folded, it takes up part of it and the capacity is reduced to 350 liters. It is better than practically all its main competitors. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible has 360 liters with the roof over the body (285 with it in the trunk); The BMW 4 Series Convertible has 370 liters (220 l if the roof is housed in the trunk) and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabrio has 390 liters (300 with the roof folded). Comparative sheet.
The shape of the trunk is diaphanous so that it can be used easily and, as a novelty, has a button that goes up and down the top, where the hood is housed. It serves to be able to check, without having to move the canopy, if the arrangement of the packages obstructs its opening in case it is wanted to be later deployed during the trip.
The backrests of the rear seats can be folded into two parts of the same size by operating knobs in the trunk. The boot lid automatically opens from the remote control and optionally a hands-free opening system (it is necessary to move the foot under the rear bumper and carry the key with you).
The Audi A5 Cabriolet 2017 has three microphones in the front seat belts, located at different height, which improve the reception quality of the vocal recognition system. There are also air vents on the top of the backrests of the front seats aimed at the occupants, a feature that already had the previous A5 Cabrio, but now can be activated directly from two buttons in the center console, and not through the Menu of the multimedia system. The equipment related to safety and comfort is similar to that of the A5 Coupé and A5 Sportback, which we detail in their respective articles.
The S5 Cabrio can accelerate from standstill to 100 kilometers per hour in 5.1 seconds and its top speed is limited to 250 km / h. The acceleration is worse than in the version of the S5 with body coupe (needs 4.7 seconds in the same measurement) since the weight is higher. This increase in weight is due to the additional reinforcements of the A5 Cabrio to compensate (as far as possible) the absence of roof, as well as the protection mechanism in case of rollover (consisting of aluminum structures that are In case of risk of overturning).
The driving assistants you can have are the same as in the Coupé and the Sportback, among which are the active speed programmer with stop and restart function in traffic jams, the rear cross traffic announcer or the recognition of Signals. Optionally the headlights can be of normal led or in Matrix arrangement (Matrix LED), that have more functions of adaptive lighting than the normal ones. You can also opt for an assisted steering that varies its rotation ratio according to the speed (dynamic steering, the series only has variable assistance).
